Pastor Deatrick is a native of Clark County.  He was raised in a Christian home and in a Baptist Church.  Becoming convicted of sin at age nine, he received Jesus as Lord and Savior in the closing service of a revival meeting at the South Wyaconda Baptist Church.  At the age of sixteen, he surrendered to preach the Gospel on February 15, 1970.  During his last three semesters of high school, he pastored the Woodville Baptist Church and the Cedar Grove Baptist Church concurrently.

He began studying for the ministry at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, and later graduated from Hyles-Anderson College in Crown Point, Indiana.  There he received a B.S. degree in Pastoral Theology.  Ordained to the Gospel ministry in 1975, he moved to St. Louis to found the Lifegate Baptist Church in Ellisville, Missouri, which he pastored for eleven years.  From 1986 through 1988, he served as assistant to Dr. L. E. Traxler at the Rochester Hills Baptist Church in Rochester Hills, Michigan.  In 1988 God called him to pastor the First Baptist Church of Wayland.  In 2003, Pastor Deatrick received a Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Ambassador Baptist College in Lattimore, North Carolina.  In August of 2008, he celebrated twenty years as the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Wayland.  February 15, 2010 marked the 40th anniversary of preaching for Pastor Deatrick (from his first sermon preached when he was sixteen years old).

He and his wife, Elsie, have been privileged to raise six children – Nathan, Levi, Stephen, Naomi, Daniel, and Michael.  From their five married children, they have twenty-one grandchildren (and another due soon).  Three of their children are in full time Christian ministry.  Stephen and Daniel are active laymen at First Baptist, and Michael is attending a Bible college in North Carolina.  Pastor and Elsie are very grateful that each of their children love the Lord and are actively serving Him in some capacity.
